🌎 How Farm to Fit Makes Healthy Meal Delivery In Portland Actually Work.

Today is Earth Day — but honestly, at Farm to Fit, every day is Earth Day. Since we opened our doors in Portland in 2011, caring for the planet has been baked into how we do business. Not as a marketing strategy. Not as a box to check. But because we genuinely believe that the way we feed people matters — for your health and for the health of the world we all share.

This Earth Day, we want to pull back the curtain and share exactly what we’re doing to walk the walk. We think you’ll be proud to eat with us.

♻️ Our In-House Recycling Program

Sustainability in food delivery is hard. Packaging is everywhere, plastics are persistent, and the convenience economy, or recycling rules, don’t always make it easy to do the right thing. We’ve leaned into solving that challenge head-on.

Here’s what our in-house recycling program looks like today:

  • Meal tray take-back: Return your clean Farm to Fit trays and we’ll make sure they’re recycled properly through our partnership with Denton Plastics — a family-owned recycling business right here in the Pacific Northwest.
  • Plastic offset partnership: We’ve partnered with rePurpose Global and CARPE India to offset our plastic footprint and fund the collection of low-value plastics from oceans and landfills.
  • Local sourcing = fewer miles: By sourcing ingredients from local Pacific Northwest farms and producers, we dramatically reduce transportation emissions while keeping your food as fresh as possible.

None of this is easy or cheap. But it’s the right thing to do — and it’s the Farm to Fit way.

🍽️ Zero Food Waste: Our Promise as a Portland Meal Delivery Service

An estimated 108 billion pounds of food is wasted in the United States every year — that’s roughly 40% of all food produced. Food waste isn’t just an economic problem; rotting food in landfills produces methane, accelerating climate change.

We’ve made it our mission to fight food waste on every front:

  • Right-sized recipes: We meticulously fine-tune every recipe and refine our purchasing forecasts so we make exactly what’s needed — no more, no less.
  • Smart inventory systems: Our kitchen operates on precision inventory management, so ingredients are used at peak freshness and nothing goes to waste.
  • Donated meals, not discarded ones: When we do have extra prepared meals, they go directly to local non-profit organizations serving food-insecure neighbors right here in the Portland community. Good food should feed people — not landfills.

Through these practices, we’ve cut our food waste to 2% — and we’re not done yet.

❤️ Feeding Our Neighbors: Food Donation Program

We believe food security is a community issue — and that everyone deserves access to nourishing, delicious meals, not just those who can afford a meal delivery subscription.

That’s why every week, Farm to Fit donates surplus prepared meals to local non-profits that are on the front lines of fighting food insecurity in Portland and the surrounding area. These aren’t leftovers — they’re the same chef-prepared, fresh, nutritious meals we deliver to your door. We just believe no good meal should go uneaten when there’s someone in our community who could use it.

On Earth Day especially, we’re reminded that sustainability isn’t just about the planet — it’s about people too.
